  1. 4 STARS I love to chase the dragon Thanks to my reading pal Donna for gifting me this heartbreakingly hopeless story of a young girl s fall into drugs over the course of several years It was a very realistic and excruciatingly hard read.Nicole heads to Boston with her best friend Eric They are excited to get away from their hometown of Bangor and want to try life on their own terms Sadly they go from using weed to very heavy drug use Nicole s parents and brother continue to try and reach out but [...]

  2. Memoirs Aren t Fairytales I m almost at a loss for words before I begin.Heroin.Addiction.Darkness.Hope.I ll never think, or read these words again, without thinking about this book If you can t tell, it touched me Actually, that isn t fair It did than that It imbedded itself on my soul Maybe it s because I related to this book on a personal level, but I don t believe there is a person out there that could read this book, and not feel torn up inside You don t need to have been an addict You don [...]

  3. Books are supposed to be fun, educative, make you dream about hero s and rainbows and glitter.Certain books slap you hard till your teeth rattle and them squeeze hold your throat THIS is that type of book A pair of innocent high schoolers Eric and Nicole drive away from their restrictive parents in New Hampshire to Freedom of Boston Massachussets And why they don t have to study or have curfew time or be accountable or choose a path in life other than just bumming it out in front of the TV.They [...]

  4. As a recovering addict, substance abuse therapist, and author of the addiction based novel Stray, I looked at this novel through a unique lense So many addiction stories are either trite, cliche, or oozing with melo drama This novel had none of that, and comes highly recommended by this reader. The main character Nicole is a realistic portrayal of how a recreational drug user slowly slips deep into heroin addiction And she gets to enjoy all the lovely side dishes served with living a life dedicat [...]

  5. A poignant story of addiction I couldn t turn the pages fast enough, nothing good comes out of losing your soul, yet I couldn t look away Everyone in my life had split, and I was in the middle, standing still But I didn t need anyone, and I wasn t lonely Smack was my dream maker It was my constant It was my true love This story gutted me I knew going in it was going to be tough to get through Anyone who s ever seen the aftermath of drugs, the damage, will relate to this story I definitely recomm [...]

  6. Well, I did itI popped my Marni Mann Cherry with this wonderfully written book about addiction and the price you pay for it, when constantly searching for that feeling you experienced with your first hit Eric and Nicole friends since Kindergarten have decided to move from the looser town they have grown up in, to become bigger and better than anyone who ever stays in their little town Boston it is This story is a very emotional ride that will totally make you understand the battles that people a [...]

  7. But heroin was my air It had a hold of me like we were chained together And those shackles weren t just around my wrists, they were tied around my brain too NICOLEThis has to be, by far, one of my favorite books of all time And for those who know me, especially my crew here on , you know I do not say that lightly I read it a while ago, but it still creeps up into my mind all the time It was face paced and I couldn t catch my breath the entire time I d never read anything like it I felt like I wa [...]

  8. Memoirs Aren t Fairytales A Story of Addiction The Memoir 1 Scars from a Memoir The Memoirs 2 by Marni Mann5 stars Am I a runaway train, or am I the track This was a duet that I needed to review straightaway, I just feel that if I get my thoughts and emotions down while I am still coming to terms with what I have just read it will have of an emotional impact These books seriously touched me, having never been around drugs or even having an inclination to try any I have never fully understood th [...]

  9. Author Marni Mann has written the literary equivalent of a scab that won t ever heal, and I mean that in the nicest, most complimentary way The scab is the gritty and very real story of Nicole Brown, a young woman out of college and looking for escape in Boston This ugly blemish doesn t necessarily stare back at us from the start, but you re cautiously aware of the choices that will ultimately transform Nicole into who she becomes a desperate junkie a young woman who is prone to picking scabs in [...]

  10. I wish I could rate this book than 5 stars because 5 stars just isn t enough Memoirs is a hard book to read It is powerful, raw, emotional and can t be taken lightly You will feel all the feels It s about Nicole a girl who had a lot going for her, who lost her way due to a past event She sadly turned to drugs, leading her to becoming a heroin addict You get the harsh, rough, painful truth about addiction and the lengths you go to, to get your next fix If anyone doesn t understand addiction this [...]

  11. I won this book from GoodReads First Reads. This book had me drugged just like the characters in this book.I couldn t put the book down even though the book is not about a happy fairytale I loved it I felt sad, weaken, ugly, high, pain, cravings, withdrawals I felt bad for her but at the same time I didn t Just wished she would have stopped using drugs and get straight before so many horrible things happened It was a perfect book to teach people not to trust no one People say there are your frien [...]

  12. This book was a no holds barred description of a girl and her spiral downward thanks to an ever growing drug addiction It was vividly detailed and Mann doesn t pull any punches in telling the reality of what happens to addicts and how they go from thinking they are better than the junkies and how they end up doing things they never thought they would in order to get their fix I like that while things were on their way to improving, Mann doesn t leave us with a happy everything will be rosy and g [...]

  13. This was an extremely hard read If you ve ever known anyone who s life has been taken over by drug addiction, this book will hit home in an uncomfortably accurate way The writing isn t the best, the sentences story told rather matter of fact but the overall message is loud and clear.Drugs are the fucking devil in this case it starts w the softer drugs and progresses into heroin The way this addiction progresses and the lengths gone to in order to get drugs the way she thought of herself and rati [...]

  14. Wow Wow Wow I felt like I was a fly on the wall while reading about Nicole Brown I know this story is fictional, but it s so real I cursed Nicole, yelled at her, shook my kindle, and at times, wanted to throw it across the room Heroin is a terrorist Truer words were never written Nicole frustrated me at every turn I both loved her and hated her Drugs ruin everything and Marni Mann opened my eyes and taught me so much This will stay with me for a very long time.

  15. Marni Mann is not the usual type of author that I read But this book caught my attention and I was compelled to read it I have to admit with a red face that it was not until 3 4 of the way through the book that I realised it was fiction, but this says a lot about the great story that it tells. This book is a tale of a young woman slowly sucked into a downward spiral of drug addiction in which heroin reigns supreme The development or should I say deconstruction of the characters in this book is su [...]

  16. I m kind of at a loss for words This was probably one of the grittiest, most difficult books I ve read Watching Nicole s gut wrenching downward spiral into drugs was like watching a train wreck And just when you think things can t get much worseey do I need to take a break before reading the sequel I really hope that Nicole gets her life back on track In the meantime, I feel like I need to scrub myself from the inside out because this book made me feel all kinds of icky

  17. Up and coming indie author Marni Mann has crafted a gritty, compelling tale in MEMOIRS AREN T FAIRYTALES, the fictional account of a young girl s descent into heroin addiction It s a graphic and haunting story, as much a confession as a cautionary tale, and one that defies any genre label I can think of, aside from literary fiction and in the most exalted, award worthy sense of the term.Nicole Brown begins as a college drop out who flees hometown life in Bangor with her best friend Eric, for a b [...]

  18. This novel isn t a true story, but honestly, I thought Nicole Brown was someone I could have known personally That s how well it was written Marni Mann will blow you away with her ability to reach out and grab you from the very first chapter, until the last page of the book I was up WAY past my normal bed time every night, struggling to stay awake but craving of this story Nicole Brown and her friend Eric decide one day that they are heading to Boston after spending their entire lives in The Ho [...]

  19. Okay I admit I didn t read any liner notes, I just started reading I made the assumption because of the word Memoir in the title that it was a self published author, writing what I refer to a d then this happened to me, and then this happened to me book I call them that, because the writing itself is nothing special descriptive and reporting There s opportunity for character development and the sort of prose that expands on the senses and draws your consciousness into the scenes, that just isn [...]

  20. With one taste, the love that once flowed through Nicole s veins turns into cravings Tracks mark the passing of time, and heroin s grip gets tighter It holds her hand through deaths and prostitution, but her addiction keeps her in the darkness When her family tries to strike a match to help light her way, Nicole must choose between a life she can hardly remember, or a love for heroin she ll never forget This caught my eye, before I bought n read this book.An Awesome book for all teens young adult [...]

  21. This is a crazy story about a girl spiraling into heroin addiction This is probably the most detailed account and an addict s life I ve ever read It is absolutely disgusting what this drug does to people I couldn t stop reading Just when you think Nicole has hit rock bottom, nope way horrible things happen There is a book 2, so I m anxious to see what the next chapter in her life holds If you re an Prime primary member, you can borrow this book for free from your kindle by searching the title

  22. Stunning, intense and utterly raw story of one girl s descent into the hell of addiction Anyone close to an addict or alcoholic needs to read this ASAP for an up close and brutally open account of how addiction makes people do and say things they would never, ever otherwise do Anyone with an addiction will see themselves in every page and, I believe, better understand the disease Gritty and not necessarily appropriate for younger readers I give this book my highest recommendation.

  23. A sad story of addiction I would have liked a bit follow up at the end about how she is currently doing Very engaging and realistic journey through addictive behavior.

  24. When I was in my early teens, I read a book called, Go Ask Alice , a diary of a teenager who had experimented with drugs That book had a profound impact on me and since I read it maybe 30 years ago , I ve been looking for books similar to it I ve read many books about drugs and addiction in my search and MEMOIRS AREN T FAIRYTALES is by far the most intense, compelling book I ve EVER read about drug use abuse This book is absolutely fantastic I was absolutely glued to each and every page I litera [...]

  25. A NOVEL, not a memoir Still tho, it was good enough for me to go out and get the sequel Jen from Quebec 0

  26. This is a review for those of you who like to step outside your gooey romance genre books from time to time There are no meet cutes , or white knights to save the princess, and the only butterflies in this story are the one an addict gets while prepping their fix forever chasing that first high over and over again This story is gritty, sad, and emotional It s a work of fiction that rings true for many in this world.Nicole is an addict who has things under control She s too smart to overdose and [...]

  27. This was such a powerful story It is about Nicole, a 23 year old girl who becomes addicted to heroin and her journey through all the pain that goes with being an addict I have had addicts as friends and this is an excellent portrayal of what happens and can happen to you With drugs you either keep using, die, or go to jail Nicole had so many horrible things happen to her I could not begin to list them and it was all related to the heroin What is amazing is, with all the horrible things that happ [...]

  28. I ve never had to physically force myself to stop reading a book before, but today, I did I had to It s not as if I wanted to stop, as if there was anything else I d rather be doing than reading this book, but there comes a point, when you have to stop I don t know if it s when the blood begins to rise from your chest into your cheeks and your face feels like it s on fire, when your heart starts beating so fast it feels as if it will tumble out of your chest, when your hands start shaking or you [...]

  29. Marni Mann s Memoirs Aren t Fairy Tales is a dark tale of misery and woe It is the story of a college drop out who becomes a drug addict The tale is told in the first person by Nicole, the protagonist The prose is taut and crisp and makes for an easy read The book is an excellent way to learn about heroin addiction via a short novel I recommend it.The focus of the story is Nicole We are privy to her internal dialogue and her motivations throughout the story She is the only character who is fully [...]

  30. I finished Memoirs Aren t Fairytales a week ago, but wanted to give it time to settle before reviewing It was that good Marni Mann is kind of my hero now I have no idea how she is able to paint characters so thoroughly human Somehow, she got me to care really care about several of the characters, not only Nicole, the protagonist Addiction is a crazy tough topic It is easily sensationalized Writers sometimes use cliches or make the good guys purely good and the bad guys purely bad Mann is able to [...]
